Drills

  • Finger Flips - Holding the ball along the seams, close the fingers quickly to spin the ball away from you.

  • Wall Circles - Stand facing a wall with toes approximately 2-3 inches away from the wall. Start with pitching arm against wall and ball at about 5 o'clock. Slowly draw a large circle on the wall, making sure to open shoulders (face wall) when your hand reaches the 12 o'clock position. Continue the circle, allowing the hand to pass the hips before closing hips and shoulders again.

  • Runner's Drill - Begin on the mound as if starting a normal pitch. Step back with the rear foot into a lunge position. Drive forward and up with the front leg into a normal pitch. Be careful not to stand up before you move forward.

  • Balance Drill (4 Square) - Draw a 4-square on the ground. Standing in the middle of the 4-square, place a ball in the front left square. While balancing on one foot, bend at the knee and move the ball from the front left (1) to the front right (2). Stand up after completing each move. Then move from (2) to back right (3), and finally from (3) to back left (4). Do this with the left leg-left hand, left leg-right hand, right leg-left hand, and right leg-right hand.

  • Balance Drill (Dynamic) -  Standing on one leg, have a partner toss you a softball. Try catching it with the same hand each time, and in all different locations. Make sure to have your partner challenge you by throwing the ball to extreme locations.
